Building Independence: A Philanthropic Opportunity to Fund Innovative SDA Housing in Adelaide

My name is Dr Darryl Sellwood. As you will see from my photo, I have cerebral palsy and I use an electric wheelchair to get around. I also have communication disability and use a variety of different tools to make myself understood. You can learn more about me in my biography on this website.

What am I trying to achieve?

I’m hoping to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative in Adelaide that could transform the landscape of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). This isn’t just about building a house; it’s about pioneering a participant-led model for disability housing that puts the needs and experiences of people with disabilities at the forefront.

My vision is to construct an SDA-compliant home in southern Adelaide, featuring two separate living spaces. While this will provide me with a tailored living environment, the true innovation lies in the approach:

  1. Participant-Led Design: As someone who understands the daily challenges faced by people with high physical support needs, I will be directly involved in every aspect of the planning and design.
  2. Empowering Independence: Reimagining SDA funding as an opportunity for a person with a disability to become a homeowner is a radical and significant innovation.
  3. Scalable Model: This project aims to create a blueprint that can be replicated, potentially revolutionizing how SDA housing is conceived and developed.

While I have secured approval for long-term SDA funding which will enable me to get a home loan to design and build an appropriate house, I need support for the initial hurdle: raising a deposit of $300,000 to $350,000 to kickstart the project.

Why This Matters

  • Addressing a Critical Gap: There’s a severe shortage of suitable housing for people with high physical support needs.
  • Shifting Paradigms: This project demonstrates how people with disabilities can lead in developing creative solutions that directly affect their lives.
  • Sustainable Investment: The SDA scheme offers stable, guaranteed funding which will be able to maintain and eventually pay for the property, making this a socially impactful and financially sound venture.

I’m reaching out to visionary philanthropists who want to be part of a movement that’s redefining disability accommodation.
